  • The breakthrough in renewable energy - (VPRO documentary - 2016)

It’s not in the papers but a silent revolution is moving across the world. Renewable energy is becoming cheaper than from fossil fuels. It means that progressively the choice for wind and solar energy is no longer an ethical one but an economic one. And this will speed up the transfer to renewable energy. In countries like Brazil, Australia, Chile and parts of the United States people consider renewable energy because of financial reasons. The price of solar and wind energy will continue to drop and in more countries renewable energy will occur. A surprising newcomer on the market is Morocco, where the government expects that in 2020 more than 40 percent of the energy could come from solar energy. On many Sundays since 1980, people have visited the Johnson Energy Clinic and Cooperative to learn about and contribute to the scientific and environmental ideas that have bloomed there in East Flatbush, Brooklyn on East 53rd Street. It is listed as a museum by Community Board 17. Jerome Johnson, who has been living there for twelve years but has owned it for about fifty, says he is tens of thousand of dollars in debt, stemming from not paying his water bill but that he hasn’t used city water in decades. Now that any Sunday could be the last, as the given date for foreclosure has passed on August 4th, Johnson sticks to his story as his defense. Every sunday groups of people visited the Solar House beginning in the early 80s. As Johnson gives a tour of the “solar house,” as it is sometimes dubbed, or John SUNhouse, he points out not only items that represent self-sufficiency and sustainability but also invaluable possessions that put together the story of how the museum came together and that could potentially be auctioned off with the house. He has framed pictures from the White House, where his earlier product, the Reflectal, a silver umbrella that was used as a lighting tool to take pictures of another Johnson, President Lindon Johnson, in the 1960s: he shows the reject pictures as well. A 1962 book, Popular Science, described the Reflectal as combining “some new technology with the old… exciting photographers from Hollywood to the Congo.” The umbrellas were lined with BoPET, a polyester film commercially known as Mylar, which could be easily replaced with aluminum foil. The Mylar also lines ceilings in the house to reflect heat. There is half of the original library on energy conservation and the like; he later shows a picture of the plethora of government-financed alternative energy journals that existed in the 70s. The mudroom has a dry plant (not thrown away), a propane tank converted into a wood stove and a door of narrow, plastic sheets: a person would come into warmth from the cold in wintertime. There are large (maybe four by four) squares of reused, painted egg cartons for insulation: the squares look like giant computer chips. There is a bumper sticker with the same logo that is now seen in Japanese: "Nuclear Power? No Thanks." There is memorabilia of Johnson’s life such as model geodesic domes from when, in the early 70s, he taught environmental high school seminars in Mamaroneck in Westchester County. There is memorabilia on the walls that feature his work for DOE, newspaper articles about the house and articles about uses of the lighting equipment, such as in the L.A. Watts riots or for photo shoots of Sammy Davis Junior. Recently, Occupy Brooklyn TV of Occupy Public Access TV, produced a short video story of the Solar House (which Johnson shared from a disk), preceding a series of Sundays in the summer when Johnson would bring people in once again. Colia Clark, a Green Party candidate for NY State Senate, promoted the visits and brought a particularly large group one Sunday. "If I lose the house I'm gonna lose history," he says. "The story really is about Carter being a peanut farmer... made his living and his whole life with a different attitude."

New Yorkers for Clean Power is a statewide campaign to rapidly shift to a clean energy economy. Through education, advocacy and organizing, the campaign engages the public, local governments and businesses to advance a range of renewable energy, efficiency and clean transportation solutions. New Yorkers for Clean Power is convened by NRDC, Sierra Club, Frack Action, Catskill Mountainkeeper, The Solutions Project and Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2). We look forward to partnering with many organizations, businesses and others across the state. New Yorkers for Clean Power launched May 2nd with a press event at Solar 1 in New York City featuring notable public figures, clean energy advocates and business leaders. This event kicked off a “Road to Renewables” tour across the state designed to educate the public through online advocacy and local events. From Montauk to Buffalo, the tour will highlight how New York is transitioning to clean energy by showcasing renewable energy initiatives as well as the expansion of electric vehicle use and infrastructure.
